securing messages with rijndael encoding instead of certificate

Dear All,

I'm wondering if It is good idea to use symetric data encryption (e.g. rijndael) for exchanging wcf messages instead of using certificate for this?

The reason behind is that I don't want to purchase digital certificate and I'm creating both the service and the client applications so I can place the secret key securly on both sides. My idea is to get the message GZIP encoder from MS samples and add encrypt and decrypt functionality to the ReadMessage and WriteMessage methods. Would that be good approach?

Regards,

Dzordz
