Featured Quote: Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv

"In 2004 UNESCO declared the city, as the world's largest concentration of International Style or "Bauhaus" buildings, a world heritage site. The International Style dominated the huge wave of construction in the 1930's and '40's and represented prevailing values of the era, such as a clean and unadorned aspect and a basic formal vocabulary attentive to the climate and residents' needs. The development of industry and technology made it possible to create innovative compositions, unique to the era, around the world. In Tel Aviv it enabled a local urban style which was open and inclusive. Over the years many "Bauhaus" buildings were transformed by the addition of stories and the closing off of balconies; their original look was warped. Although the Municipality has resolved to preserve (many) buildings, it has no way to force houseowners to preserve homes and return them to their original condition. The initiative must be private and thus the renewal of Tel Aviv Bauhaus is a slow process."

Missing UML Class diagram template

I have VS2010 Ultimate installed and was trying to experiment with some of the new architecture tools.  I was trying to add a new 'UML Class Diagram' to my Modeling project, but that template is missing from the Add New Diagram dialog.  (The UML Sequence diagram template is also missing).  All I have in the dialog is UML Use Case Diagram, UML Activity Diagram, UML Component Diagram, and Layer Diagram.

Any ideas?  Do I need to reinstall?

Thanks,

Tim

30 Black & White Logos and Business Cards for Design Inspiration

Logos come in all shapes and sizes. When designing a logo, one has to think of how it will look sans color and transfer over into black and white for printing. Negative space is very important, as is legibility. Color adds a whole new dimension, feel and emotional response. Designing a logo without these elements [...]

Art deco ceramics by Clarice Cliff

Clarice Cliff (1899 - 1972) was an English ceramic industrial artist, who created some of the most beautiful art deco pieces of all time, definitely in the art rather than crafts genre. Her works often feature in the BBC TV show Flog it, and I always have the same feeling when i see them: I'd like to own some of it. Oh well, maybe one day.

Quebec Should Be Fighting Sprawl Not Creating More!

Excellent article in the Gazette talks about recommendations from a couple of ecologically concerned groups. Also completely lost on the politicians of the day is the fact that giving climate change the fight of our lives would create more permanent, and useful, jobs than the status quo could ever hope to produce. File upload Service for browser client and problem on passing the fileName

I'm trying to create a File Upload service using WCF for a Browser client, so I'm hosting the service in ASP.Net and using webHttpBinding.
The service contract needs to be something like this:

namespaceFileUpload.Service
{
[ServiceContract]
publicinterfaceIFileUploadService
{
[OperationContract]
[WebInvoke(UriTemplate="UploadFile/{fileName}")]
voidUploadFile(stringfileName,StreamfileContent);
}
}

I need the fileName to save the file with the given name and as we know, when using Stream as a parameter, it has to be the only parameter in Message Body.
If I wasn't using webHttpBinding, I could have create a MessageContract and pass the fileName in Message Header, but since I do have to use webHttpBinding, this is not an option.
The only way to have fileName as input parameter is to pass it in Uri as shown above.

Having the contract, I implemented the service like:

namespaceFileUpload.Service
{
[AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode=AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)]
publicclassFileUploadService
:IFileUploadService
{
#regionIFileUploadServiceMembers
publicvoidUploadFile(stringfileName,StreamfileContent)
{
using(StreamReaderfileContentReader=newStreamReader(fileContent))
{
stringcontent=fileContentReader.ReadToEnd();
}
}
#endregion
}
}

and the web.config like:

<system.serviceModel>
<behaviors>
<endpointBehaviors>
<behaviorname="fileUploadEndpointBehavior">
<webHttp/>
</behavior>
</endpointBehaviors>
<serviceBehaviors>
<behaviorname="fileUploadServiceBehavior">
<serviceDebugincludeExceptionDetailInFaults="true"/>
<serviceMetadatahttpGetEnabled="true"/>
</behavior>
</serviceBehaviors>
</behaviors>
<serviceHostingEnvironmentaspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true"/>
<services>
<servicename="FileUpload.Service.FileUploadService"behaviorConfiguration="fileUploadServiceBehavior">
<endpointaddress=""behaviorConfiguration="fileUploadEndpointBehavior"
binding="webHttpBinding"contract="FileUpload.Service.IFileUploadService"/>
</service>
</services>
</system.serviceModel>

And the problem is, I get an exception on having fileName as an input parameter beside fileContent by browsing http://localhost/FileUpload.svc:

I even tried hosting the service as follows, and surprisingly it works: (but I need it to be hosted by ASP.Net)

ServiceHosthost=newServiceHost(typeof(FileUploadService),newUri("http://localhost/FileUpload"));
ServiceEndpointserviceEndpoint=host.AddServiceEndpoint(typeof(IFileUploadService),newWebHttpBinding(),"");

host.Open();

Dose anyone have any idea What am I doing wrong?!
I really appreciate your concern.

Muybridge - A work in motion

The Muybridge installation is a study set out to capture temporal change in 3D. A three-step sequence of a bird spreading its wings is reconstructed and sculpted into T-Shirts. As the change in the wings' position is a function of time, each wing's plumage is reduced to polygonal form, modeled and rigged into successive arrangements to portray the spreading motion continue

Chicago Tribune to Prentice: Drop Dead

Update: see the postscript at the end of this post.
click image for larger view
The Chicago Tribune took time off from its second favorite activity of bashing labor to concentrate on its first: shilling for the overprivileged. In a pre-emptive strike as brazen as it was disgusting, the paper used their editorial page to call for the destruction of Bertrand Goldberg's Prentice Hospital, currently the focus of a major preservation battle

Alderman Brendan Reilly recently won a 60 delay in Northwestern University's intention to file for a demolition permit for the structure, pending a re-use study currently being completed by a team headed by Landmarks Illinois. That study should be released soon, but the Tribune couldn't wait.  It swallowed Northwestern's arguments whole, especially one about how the building "uses only one about one-third of the square footage that could be comfortably built on the site."  Translation:  let's have another massive, sidewalk to sidewalk behemoth of the type that has made the Northwestern hospital campus one of the most oppressive and unattractive districts in the city.  Has anyone at the Tribune editorial board actually taken the time to go see it?  Or the the full empty block Northwestern has already leveled just across the street, which stands behind cheap, ugly fences with no sign of life?

The Tribune tries to hide behind their support for saving the old County Hospital to justify its action, but that just falls into their standard MO.  County Hospital was, of course, a government agency, and we all know - because the Tribune tells us - that all government is bad and infantile, so throwing a sop on saving County Hospital is a good way to humor the children.  To the Tribune, however, a private interest like Northwestern is sacred, never to be troubled with tough questions; only served.

The only remaining question is Trib architecture critic Blair Kamin's role in this.  Did the Trib editorial board do this to defuse Kamin's potential opposition to demolishing Prentice, or did they do it with Kamin's active participation?  His readers deserve to know.

Postscript:  And Blair did respond, with suitable umbrage, in a comment you can see appended to this post.  "You're asking a ridiculous question," he wrote. "Of course I had nothing to do with the writing of today's Tribune editorial."

I responded that, given the timing of the Tribune's editorial coming so close on the heels of Kamin's April 4th article, the question was anything but ridiculous.  This is Chicago, where a City News Bureau editor once famously ordered a cub reporter, "If your mother says she loves you, check it out."

The fact that Blair had nothing to do with the writing of the editorial is a two-edged sword.  On one edge, it leaves his journalistic integrity unsullied.  On the other, what does it say when a paper's editorial board rushes into print an editorial directly contervailing the views of its Pulitzer-Prize winning critic that doesn't even acknowledge that he made them?

As I mentioned originally, the claims in the Tribune editorial are deceptive, dissembling and largely untruthful.  Vince Michael does an excellent job of taking them apart one by one, and you can read his analysis here.

Later on Monday, Blair, whose writing is often so measured it can be difficult to make out where he stands on a controversial issue, made himself exceptionally clear:  "It would be a travesty to demolish old Prentice."  Let the battle be joined.

EnergizeIT 2010: Coming Very Soon!

image

In a couple of weeks, Microsoft?s Technical Evangelism Team will embark on the EnergizeIT 2010 Tour, a cross-country set of presentation showing what?s possible with Microsoft tools and technology. If you want to know how Visual Studio 2010, Office 2010, SharePoint 2010 and other Microsoft tools and tech can cut your costs and help your business and organization, you should catch an EnergizeIT event near you. They?re free, and they?re happening in the next few weeks!

Depending on the city, there will be different ?flavours? of EnergizeIT events. I?ve written some descriptions below, and if you want the full set of details, check out the EnergizeIT page.

The ?From the Client to the Cloud? Full-Day Events (Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal)

City skylines: Vancouver (YVR), Edmonton (YEG), Calgary (YYC), Ottawa (YOW), Toronto (YYZ), Montreal (YUL)

In Canada?s six largest cities, we?ll hold our EnergizeIT From the Client to the Cloud full-day events, where we?ll cover the Microsoft-based platform in detail. And yes, even though it?s full-day, it?ll still be free!

Please note: The Toronto session is currently booked. You can register, but you?ll end up on the first-come, first served waiting list.

In the morning, we?ll talk about the big picture. We?ll show you a scenario featuring the Microsoft-based platform as seen from different points of view: the customer, the information worker, the developer and the IT professional. You?ll see our latest and greatest as well as our up-and-coming developer goodies: Silverlight, .NET 4.0 and Visual Studio 2010. We?ll show you Windows 7 and Azure in action, talk about Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010, and tell you how all of Microsoft?s stuff works together.

Just as the morning session answers the question ?What?s the latest technology??, the afternoon sessions answer the question ?How do I get to the latest technology from where I am now?? These sessions, split into two tracks ? one on infrastructure management and deployment, one on the development process ? will cover what you can do with our tools and technology in a little more depth. They?ll show you what you need to implement what you saw in the morning session and provide a roadmap you can follow to learn more and take action.

For more details about From the Client to the Cloud events or to register (it?s free!), visit the EnergizeIT From the Client to the Cloud page.

The ?Community Connection? Evening Events (Many Cities Across Canada)

A scene from EnergizeIT 2009 in Mississauga

Log Chop Bench : The Practice of Everyday Design

For The Practice of Everyday Design, the Log Chop Bench represents an exploration in process-based design. They decided to approach the concept of this one-off piece by setting up a series of parameters that would define the final product without them relying on drawings or a concrete final image. Abstraction in green

A rather popular shot from my recent Shanghai trip, turning ceiling lighting decoration into an abstract photograph. Some of the comments I received: "One of those photos where the repeated object creates an irregular pattern despite it's regular shape", "Classic Art Rock shot! It's lovely, patterned, has beautiful color, and completely abstract. It has it all", "Somehow it's almost an optical illusion", and "Boggles the mind with endless patterns". With a handheld exposure time of  two tenths of a second, this was quite a challenge technically!

Camera: Canon PowerShot Pro1 8 Megapixels, handheld
Exposure: 0.2 sec (1/5)
Aperture: f/3.2
Focal Length: 16.1 mm

Missing UML Class diagram template

I have VS2010 Ultimate installed and was trying to experiment with some of the new architecture tools.  I was trying to add a new 'UML Class Diagram' to my Modeling project, but that template is missing from the Add New Diagram dialog.  (The UML Sequence diagram template is also missing).  All I have in the dialog is UML Use Case Diagram, UML Activity Diagram, UML Component Diagram, and Layer Diagram.

Any ideas?  Do I need to reinstall?

Thanks,

Tim

Need some architecture advice Exchange 2010

I am spear heading a project where we are moving from communigate to Exchange 2010.  We have multiple business units each with its own email domain and stand alone AD.   Our goal is to consolidate to a centralized AD while deploying Exchange.   Each of the business units operates in a different market space and we are operating under the guidelines that users will only be able to browse AD objects of their business unit.  We need to effectively block the users from browsing or exploring the other business units.

Here are the different scenarios we’ve been looking into (I am looking for feedback from users who have worked in these different environments):

Single forest single domain

Pro’s- ease of management and account provisioning

Con’s – Setting up permissions in AD to prevent business units from seeing each other is problematic at best.  The one work around I found was frowned upon in other MS boards http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverDS/thread/b9b1c1ee-408b-4db0-8b9e-6102497039a6 Difficult to customize OWA experience.

Single forest multiple domain non hosted exchange
**Disclaimer I have a background working with Exchange 2003 and 2007 in a single forest single domain model only.  This is new ground and my only exposure is what I have read.

From what I have read it should be possible to have a single forest and multiple domains.  Host Exchange in the root domain for the different domains?   Which is the better path to take?  Discontiguous name space with separate domain trees in the forest (BusinesUnit1.com, businessUnit2.com, etc).  Or have a contiguous forest where the domains are hierarchical, then set up UPN suffixes for the desired friendly user-logon name.

Multiple forests with dedicated Exchange forest
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997312(EXCHG.65).aspx While this model would work it’s seems like a bit overkill when each business unit has roughly 20-50 staff members.   Plus the cost is a bit prohibitive.  Account provisioning seems like it would take a bit more administrative time.  If anyone has real world experience with this sort of set up I would to hear what your impression of this design is.
