Card Sorting and Usability

Das hier ist ein recht guter Blog-Beitrag: Usability Testing With Card Sorting.

Information architecture is a big component of web design. What order should elements go in? Is there a visual hierarchy that must be followed? What should go where? Is the current navigational structure the most efficient? These are just some questions that a designer faces. Many designers construct websites based on their own views of how things should be ordered for the best results. This is a step in the right direction ? because as a trained professional, you?ll have a good idea of what works and what doesn?t ? but for enhanced usability, testing designs and information architecture on users can provide great insights.

Der Artikel enthlt einige Beispiele ist und ist sehr lesenswert.

Support for Windows 2000 and XP SP2 Ends on July 13th so Mark Your Calendars

win2klogo

It’s amazing how time flies.  I remember writing one of the first in a series of books talking about Active Directory, one of the big enhancements to Windows 2000, and can’t believe that I was doing that more than 10 years ago!  But, time marches on and I have written many more books on Windows since then, better versions of Windows have since shipped, and Active Directory has changed a lot from its early days in Windows 2000 Server.

I know that many of you have been upgrading to newer releases of Windows and have been trying to keep current as best as you can.  Maybe you still have some Windows 2000 machines in your network.  Maybe you have some Windows XP SP2 machines connecting to those networks and have not had a chance to upgrade them to Windows 7 (or at least Windows XP SP3).   If you see yourself in that situation, you should initiate an action plan to move your machines to the newer Windows versions sooner rather than later because support will end for Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Workstation, and Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 2 on July 13th, 2010.

So with that said, here is a short Q&A to help answer some questions you may have:

What does “End of Support” mean?

  • It means your machine will no longer receive security patches, hot fixes, or incident support.

What are my options?

  1. Upgrade to the latest version (Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2)
  2. Migrate to the latest Service Pack
  3. Stay on unsupported products and accept the risk.  Probably not the best long term approach so I would recommend options 1 and 2.

Where can I find more information?

  • Here are my two favorite End of Life Solution Centers to gather information on resources and tools to help you figure out your next step: Windows Server 2000 and Windows XP

Remember that one of the best places to learn from local experts on how to migrate from Windows XP and deploy Windows 7 is TechDays, so register now for an event in your city.  You can also visit the Springboard site on help how to migrate to Windows 7. For migration help to Windows Server 2008 R2, check out the End of Life Solution Center for Windows 2000.

LCD Soundsystem

LCD Soundsystem have announced that they will play their last ever show on April 2 in New York. James Murphy says that the date at Madison Square Garden will be a three-hour extravaganza. Sounds like something you'd like to hear.

In a statement, they said: "We are retiring from the game. Gettin? out. Movin? on. If it?s a funeral, let?s have the best funeral ever!"

Desirable UX

Guten Morgen, liebe THS-Leser. Da bin ich doch heute frh beim Frhsurfen doch glatt ber diesen recht interessanten Beitrag gestolpert: UX is 90% Desirability.

It is hard to say what truly makes something desirable because the answer is: It depends. Some companies have gone as far as to hire ethnographers to study and observe customers for months (even years) to help them understand what their desires are by understanding their lives and motivations: ?[...] closely observing people where they live and work allows companies to zero in on their customers? unarticulated desires.?2 Angry Birds became a smash hit, where other similar games had not seen anything close to that success. Some claim this explosive popularity of Angry Birds can be explained, but if someone was to follow this formula they?d miss out on that magic of the original. There are other factors like timing/trends and the getting the attention of your audience. You can follow the rules and build a great product, but it might miss out on something else.

Ein sehr lesenswerter Beitrag und genau der richtige Start in die Woche.

Ach brigens: geht jemand von Euch auch zur Droidcon?

Landmarks Illinois releases convincing reuse report for Bertrand Goldberg's Prentice Hospital

Northwestern University is hell-bent on destroying an essential piece of Chicago architecture,  Bertrand Goldberg's Prentice Hospital, saying  they've investigated re-use options and determined that there is no other choice.

Bunk. The Chicago Tribune editorial board may have swallowed those empty claims whole, but most Chicagoan's are not so gullible.  Now, Landmarks Illinois has now called Northwestern's bluff with a stunning report, A New Use for a Modern Landmark: A Reuse Study for the Former Prentice Women's Hospital.  It's a great and compelling read, and you can - and should - download it here.

It's a fact-packed, eloquently illustrated and thoroughly researched study of the structure, beginning with a list of testimonials on the building's importance from everyone from Helmut Jahn, Jeanne Gang, and Blair Kamin, to The New Yorker's architecture critic Paul Goldberger.  The building includes 340,000 square-feet of space, with 17,000 square feet of open plan space on each of the seven floors in the iconic cloverleaf tower.
That open plan makes the building especially suitable for re-use, and the report comes up with three possibilities, as a Research Lab Tower that could accommodate over 800 researchers, an office tower accommodating up to 2,000 workers in the kind of "open office" plan that's becoming increasingly prevalent in workplace design, or as a residential tower with over 100 residences for medical staff or student housing.
That third option was actually presented a while back by Northwestern PhD student "Nick" in a comment to one of my earlier posts on the battle of save Prentice . . .
Prentice is situated right in the middle of the medical, business, and law schools (directly connected via tunnel or bridge to the medical campus) and would be an ideal location. We also desperately need a student union and community space to promote interaction, which is currently non-existent within and between programs. I would be very surprised if Prentice would require extensive work to convert into a welcoming, functional student center, which would have the added bonus of keeping with Goldberg's original spirit and vision.
Landmarks Illinois reports that reusing Prentice would be, on average, over 40% cheaper than recreating the space in a replacement structure. Just as importantly, it would prevent the creation of another 23,700 tons of construction waste, one of the primary contributors to the nation's landfills.  As has been proven time and again, the greenist building is usually the one that's already built.

You can debate the particulars of the Landmarks Illinois report, but it makes the primary message crystal clear:  Northwestern's claims that Prentice Hospital is some sort of unsalvageable white elephant are without foundation.  Not only is Prentice Hospital a central and irreplaceable part of Chicago's architectural legacy, Bertrand Goldberg designed it such a way that it can remain a valuable, productive piece of real estate for many decades to come.

Download this eye-opening report here.

New owner of Kluge winery suffers political setback

Donald Trump, the man who would be president and the man who bought a foreclosed local winery, suffered a setback today, as the actual president unveiled his actual birth certificate, showing that-- contrary to claims by Trump and other so-called "birthers"-- that the U.S. President was born in the state of Hawaii and therefore eligible for the presidency. The Washington Post quotes Trump, now busily making the rounds of New Hampshire where presidential campaigns often start, enthusing over his role in getting President Barrack Hussein Obama II's long-form birth certificate released.

Paris 26 Gigapixels

26a.jpg

I have to agree with the A/N Blog that Paris 26 Gigapixels -- a rooftop panorama from the top of Saint Sulpice that stitches 2,346 individual hi-res photos -- is quite a way to while away some time. The mansard roofscape definitely dominates the foreground, and well-known sites (Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, etc.) are highlighted, but I spent a little bit of time looking for some recent architecture. What did I find?

You might be a reader of this blog because it may lead you to discovering new music. I mean, that is why I read the blogs I subscribe to. I'm always on the lookout for that new artist or one I just missed out on. So, in an effort to get the word out, please enjoy White Sea. Below is a new music video "Mountaineer" from their EP "This Frontier". Singer Morgan Kibby was vocalist/keyboardist for M83 (I played a few from M83's album, Saturdays=Youth. It was #1 on Billboard's Heatseeker Albums, #4 on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Albums and hailed as one of the best 100 albums of the decade).
Watch it here, or better yet, watch it on Youtube and give 'em a thumbs-up.

The high point in these images is a ‘hillfort’ 150m above the North Sea and with nothing but water and ice between this point and the north pole. The name ‘hill-fort’ suggests a fort on a hill. WCF Client calling Java web service through a gateway using https, soap1.1, and http and soap headers

I have a client that needs to talk to an XML gateway to get to a backend java service.  I've run the WSDL through the svcutil for the classes and was able to interact with the service when not going through the gateway.

However, the requirements for the gateway are:

  • has to use soap1.1
  • must include username and password in the soap headers
  • must include a SOAPAction in the HTTP headers
  • all communication is over HTTPS.

It seems that wsHttpBinding would satisfy everything if it wasn't for the pesky soap1.1 issue.  What would be the custom configuration bindings that would satisfy the gateway requirements?  I've been experimenting for way too long and can't seem to uncover the magical combination to talk through the gateway.  Any information would be greatly greatly appreciated.

Marmol Radziner Prefab-designed Pop-Up Showroom Helps Bring Glamour to Kohler's New Advanced Toilet, Numi

Architecture can help sell a $6,400 Kohler Numi advanced toilet. Visit kohler.com/numi

Moments in the day of the life of a young, successful couple are captured cinematically in Kohler' Co's latest marketing campaign stateside, for the company's new and most advanced toilet, Numi. The premium product, launched April 26th at the Kitchen and Bathroom Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas, is offering a host of new technology-driven comfort and water-saving features with an original industrial design approach. Numi is available this fall nationwide at a retail price of $6,400, and end 2011 in Europe.

Every aspect of Numi's marketing campaign (created by design firm Ammunition) has been carefully controlled by positioning the toilet in the context of a glamorous lifestyle. Architects MARMOL RADZINER have created a sleek popup showroom, a minimal prefab module, which debuts the Numi at KBIS, and at the Dwell on Design event end-June.

The location of the Numi shoot is the iconic Case Study house #21 by legendary architect Pierre Koenig. The audacious nature of the Numi is matched by it's setting: converting the living room of one of the world's most famous houses into a bathroom, complete with floor to ceiling glass walls that overlook the L.A. Basin.

The Stahl house represents the best of American modernist architecture; this along with the high end designer clothes, and the most amazing toilet help to paint a picture of success, indicative of the type of customer for whom the Numi is targeted. The campaign captures a moment of "I have arrived."

Free/Busy between different exchange boxes in different forests

Hi

We have 2 separate exchange servers on 2 different forests.  We want to share free/busy information between the 2 forests so users are aware of other forest users' schedule when creating meetings in outlook.

I read that Interorg replication tool can be used but....

1. We need a tool such as FIM 2010 OR MIIS 2003 to create contacts on opposite forest FIRST?

OR

2. Interorg replication tool is stand alone and will take care of everything without the need for an indentity management package.

Thanks

The Dune House. A New Stunning Modern Beach Home in the Village of Thorpeness.

Mole Architects has collaborated with the Norwegian firm Jarmund Visgnaes Architects on this beautiful modern beach house which is located just south of the picturesque village of Thorpeness in Suffolk. The Dune House can accommodate up to nine people with its five bedrooms.

You can book The Dune House for a weekend (3-nights, Friday to Monday), a mid-week break (4-nights, Monday to Friday) or a week (7-nights, Friday to Friday. Prices start from just 760 for a 4-night break (the equivalent of 22 per person per night).

?For us the most interesting tension was to create something that would not only fit in with the local landscape and ?society?, but would also be refreshingly new?, says director Hakon Vigsnaes. ?The gabled roof is particularly ?English? ? not something you would find in Norway ? so we wanted to make a feature of that.?

The roof, clad in a lightly tinted orange steel alloy, reflects the changing colours of the sea and sky and the panoramic windows on the ground floor offer views of the sea, whilst giving the sense of the house being nestled in the dunes. JVA wanted to create more than just a space for sleeping upstairs, so each of the four double bedrooms has a bathtub in it, with windows carefully positioned so that one can lie in warm water and take in views of the North Sea and surrounding meadows. Separate shower and toilet facilities are attached to each room and there is a small library and roof terrace on this floor.

The home has four double bedrooms on the first floor (bedrooms 1 + 2 can be made up as twins), all with a bath in the room, and ensuite shower and WC. On the ground floor, there is one bedroom(with a single bed) and an ensuite shower and WC.

The ground floor, which comprises a living area, kitchen, terrace and further en-suite bedroom, is slightly sunken into the dunes to provide a sense of privacy and a measure of protection from the wind coming off the North Sea. Sliding doors at each corner further help to visually dematerialise the ground floor.

Polished concrete, glass and aluminium predominate on the ground floor, while the upper story is constructed from solid timber planks which are left exposed internally.
